Safe haven

Per statistics, the major part of all freight in the world is carried by the sea transport. At all times, seafaring has been one of the most in-demand occupation, and, therefore, one of the most stable. The demand for Latvian seafarers (especially for the officership) is rather high on the international market. The leading crewing companies of the world are seeking to employ primarily Scandinavians. Latvia is in the 4th place in Europe by number of marine officers.

High salary, fast career development, opportunity to see the world and learn about culture and traditions of other nations, constant practice in a foreign language, and an opportunity to prove yourself as a man by overcoming nature and mechanics – these are the undeniable advantages of seamanship.

Why does statistics show that the number of man willing to work at sea has dramatically decreased? One of the reasons is lack of any social guarantees. Unfortunately, at the moment, most of the companies fly vessels under convenient flags. Thus, our seamen are employed on foreign vessels. Consequently, the seafarers are not entitled to receive neither the retirement, nor unemployment compensation, nor any other social benefits.

Expecting an assured life at retirement age is not an option. Taking care about living at old age is solely at seafarer’s responsibility.
